The Golden Compass
I had a chance to see the Golden Compass on the weekend and it was a refreshing enjoyable movie. The first time in a long time that I didn't look at my watch wondering when it was going to be over. First of all the special effects were fantastic and very storybook. It makes me wonder what some of the other hit fantasy movies from the past could be like with today's technology. I am sure it is on Hollywood's list of 'to do's' during the next writers strike.
The Golden compass on top of being visually stimulating had a lot to say about human character. The idea of everyone having a demon that takes a shape representative of that person's inner spirit is very telling. How nice it would be in our day to day world to know what we are up against when we meet someone new.
The relationships between the little girl hero, the bear and the rest of the cast were predictable but that didn't take anything away from the story. Nicole Kidman was surprisingly good as the "baddie" in the movie and reminiscent of a Cruella DeVil type character.
All in all I give this movie a thumbs up and look forward to the next installment.
