Movie soundtracks (Discussion)

Combining movies with music is a great idea.

What movies do you think have the best soundtracks?
Do musicals in general get you or do you like the soundtracks used in non-musical films to complement the plot?
Any great specific song-scene combinations you especially like?

    My favorite soundtracks are:

    1) Preisner’s music for the Three Colours (Blue, White, Red) Trilogy by Kieslowski

    2) Ennio Morricone’s music for The Mission

    3) Jonny Greenwood’s music for There WIll be Blood

    4) John Corigliano for The Red Violin

    5) The Miami Vice Soundtrack (hey, it can’t all be serious!)

Matrix (the first) used a great selection of great techno beats to add a great feel behind the film and it’s scenes (action or not). These were pulled from an assorted number of artists from around the techno scene.

When it comes to actual orchestrated soundtracks, the best are Gladiator, Braveheart, Rock when you think of more modern epic cinema. Thoman Newman also creates some amazing film sound: American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Meet Joe Black, and The Green Mile.

Favourite soundtrack of all time: Yann Tiersen’s genius at work in Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain.

I agree with Adam, the Matrix soundtrack is powerful and makes sense with the plot.

I’m personally a musicals fan… Wizard of Oz for example, it’s a great classic. And there’s so many more I can’t think of at the moment.

Other soundtracks I’ve liked- Shrek (the first), the Departed, Breakfast Club.

My favourite though would have to be the Blues Brothers. An incredible, very musically oriented movie…

Has anybody here actually tried synchronizing the Dark Side of the Moon with the Wizard of Oz? Does that work?

I was never sure how it’s supposed to work… do you turn the music on at the beginning, or when she gets to Oz? And what do you do when the album ends, do you play it again from the beginning?

I don’t know who started this practice, probably nobody does really… but combining a great movie with a great album is a great idea, isn’t it?

I wonder whether you can do this with other stuff… any suggestions? Singing in the Rain with Beggar’s Banquet? My Fair Lady with Abbey Road? Sound of Music with Ziggy Stardust?

I’m a huge fan of the movie Into the Wild and the soundtrack in a big part of why I loved the movie so much. It’s all acoustic songs by Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and I believe the songs were all written specifically for the movie so it has some real relevance as well. Check out the movie and the soundtrack when you get the chance and you won’t be disappointed!

Musicals are tricky to attempt, but if they’re sucessful they usually become classics – like The Sound of Music , West Side Story and Grease! And gotta love those Elvis musicals!

I think film soundtracks can make a mediocre film really great, just because the music helps to invoke the particular emotion or atmosphere of the scene. My favourite song scenes are the beginning of Breakfast at Tiffany’s when Moon River plays, Casablanca when Sam plays As Time Goes By for Ilsa, and The Pianist when he plays Chopin’s Ballade for the German police officer…so many good scenes rely on good music…

Top Gun was one of the first movies to really get a runaway hit with the soundtrack.

And Rocky was also a soundtrack that made everyone cheer!
