Share your Top 10 Films (Discussion)

lechuck saidMon, 31 Mar 2008 15:50:31 -0000 ( Link )

As an independent filmmaker, watching films is a must. When I find a hidden gem of a film, it really gets me motivated to throw away the time I usually spend sleeping in order to direct a great little film. So, let’s share our favorite films of all time so that perhaps we can find another hidden gem that gets the film blood pumpin’.

Here are mine:

10. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

9. Shaun of the Dead

8. Casablanca

7. Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn

6. Children of Men

5. The Shinning

4. There Will be Blood

3. Apocalypse Now

2. Shawshank Redemption

1. The Big Sleep

I have a broad taste in films. Certain films make my top 10, not because they are extremely well filmed, or have the most impacting story in the world—but because they each have their own story and effected me in a different way.

For example, while Evil Dead II isn’t by any means a good film, it inspires me. Sam Raimi and the crew were filmmakers like myself with no budget and still managed, out of sheer will, to pave their own road to success.

Many would disagree that The Big Sleep should be higher in the list than Casablanca. For me, The Big Sleep was far smarter, and the mystery of it was far more engaging. The chemistry between Lauren Bacall and Bogart was what really made the movie magical! It’s why I love it, and watch it over and over and over and over.

I wouldn’t have pegged you as a romantic watching The Big Sleep over and over again. I’ll work on my list and post it soon. 10 films… that’s quite a task to narrow down to 10 best.

    9. Forest Gump

    8. Meet Joe Black

    7. Lawrence of Arabia

    6. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

    1. Withnail and I

    2. The Big Lebowski

    3. Rushmore

    4. Magnolia

    5. The Philadelphia Story

    6. Les 400 coups

    7. The Royal Tenenbaums

    8. All About Eve

    9. Raising Arizona

    10. Bottle Rocket

I made this list several years ago for the site YMDB (http://www.shompy.com/jmcnally/l12387_ukuk.html) so it’s probably time I looked at it again, but listmaking in general is really difficult. I think there would be more foreign films in it now.

Andrew… really? I couldn’t be more surprised by your top 10 list. I’m looking forward to renting Eagle v Shark though… that looks hilarious. Forrest Gump has THE best soundtrack EVER, but why is it your favorite movie of all time?

If you like the B-budget Boondock Saints, have you seen the new Jodie Foster movie “The Brave One?” You may like it. It runs along the same lines.

I didn’t even know they made a Super Mario movie until I saw your list…

My question is… how did you pick this top 10. Is it based on the movies that have the highest replay value to you or are they the ones that made the biggest impact on you when you first saw them? Do you appreciate a good director or are you more of a plot/script guy?

I’m having a hard time making a favorite movie list because if we’re talking replay value, movies like “The Rundown,” Romancing the Stone,” Indiana Jones,” “Shaun of the Dead,” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” “Die Hard,” “Dante’s Peak,” any of the Harry Potter movies… they would all be contenders… but they aren’t the best scripted or directed movies I’ve seen. They are the ones that I can rewatch while doing other things over and over again…

I guess I’m just struggling with narrowing down all my various favorite movies from each time period and genre into one list and naming one as better than another… It’s like picking your favorite child… I’m not willing to do it…. nana nana boo boo!

    Hey RLLillis,

Just give it a try. Write down a list and see how it looks. It is hard to “commit” to a top ten but then again it’s only a discussion forum and not a life changing decision…. or is it? ;-)

@Rachel – My picks are a mish-mash of films that have impacted me, that had a style I love, or films that I could watch over and over and over again (hence Desperado and Mortal Kombat will always remain in my top 10).

I agree it is hard though, and just when I think I’ve got it nailed down, I realize I’ve forgotten something.

My favs are not strictly in this order, but it’s a good approximation. It’s really hard to narrow down to 10 since I tend to like many films from the same director, but I only list one per director. My top ten list could be entirely filled of films by Kubrick, Tarantino & Wes Anderson alone ….

    1. Pulp Fiction
    2. Barry Lyndon
    3. Leon (The Professional)
    4. Enter the Dragon
    5. Donnie Darko
    6. City of God
    7. Trainspotting
    8. Groundhog Day
    9. Rushmore
    10. The Big Lebowski

I have another edition to my list that I was reminded of last night. I have always really enjoyed Good Will Hunting. I have seen it too many times to count.

Does Band of Brothers count as a movie? It’s a bunch of mini-movies that combine into one marathon of a movie… it’s great none the less!

Here’s my list. But before you comment on it, I’m already aware that my taste in movies is horrible. I never claimed it wasn’t. In no particular order except for #1:

    10. The Matrix

    9. Spiderman 2

    8. Ocean’s 11

    7. The Departed

    6. The Italian Job

    5. Rattle and Hum (it’s an old U2 movie, you should watch it)

    4. Forrest Gump

    3. Mortal Kombat

    2. The Untouchables

But my absolute #1 movie I’ve watched so many times I know it by heart… (drum-roll please)... Catch Me If You Can! It’s the best movie ever.

This was great reading this discussion and being able to add so many movies to that list of must-see flicks that I keep somewhere in my brain but never seem to be able to access when I’m at the movie store and looking for something to rent…

Here’s my first try at it off the top of my head. Several have already been listed but that’s what I get for joining the discussion so late. Also in no particular order…..

    The Godfather

    Boondock Saints

    Fargo

    Into the Wild

Lock, Stock, and two smoking barrels

    Forrest Gump

    The Motorcycle Diaries

    Reservoir Dogs
